WhatsApp says goodbye to direct access to Messenger Rooms for group video calls

In May 2020, when the pandemic was already ravaging the West, Facebook decided to make a double move regarding video calls. On the one hand, it activated the Rooms in Messenger, with the possibility of making video calls of up to 50 people simultaneously. On the other, it placed a direct access to the Rooms in WhatsApp, so that we could extend the video calls of the app whenever we wanted.

Thus, in WhatsApp we could make video calls of up to eight people, a number that also doubled in the midst of the pandemic, and if you needed to add more participants you could go to one of the Messenger Rooms, its competitor and sister app at the same time. Well, it seems, and that is what WABetaInfo tells us, direct access to Messenger Rooms has flown from the WhatsApp app.

WhatsApp recovers the Share menu that it had before the arrival of Rooms

We return to the old menu, without direct access to the Messenger Rooms

For practical purposes, this direct access did not suppose any competitive advantage for WhatsApp, since the same restrictions were maintained in the app regarding the number of users. A maximum of 8, not one more but less. What Facebook wanted was that if WhatsApp was our usual chat, we could jump to Messenger and use one of its best features with a single touch on the screen.

It was enough to press the button of the clip in any WhatsApp chat and then click on the camera icon, the one that took us to Messenger and its Rooms. The function, however, has now disappeared from the betas of WhatApp for Android and also from those of iOS, although it seems that the disappearance is being gradual.

Usually, WhatsApp measures which functions are used more or less to determine if it is convenient to subtract or add weight to them, and everything to point to what not many videoconferences should have been launchedGroup s from the Messenger Rooms button, as the button says goodbye. WABetaInfo tells us that it is disappearing in versions 2.21.190.11 for iOS and 2.21.19.15 for Android.

So, we return to the previous menu launched from the clip, that of attaching things to chats. We return to the menu with an access for documents, another for the camera, another for the photo gallery, another for audios, another for location and the last for contacts. Six accesses instead of the seven we had so far. Goodbye to quick access to Messenger rooms. We will see what the purpose of this change is later. If WhatsApp is encouraged to tell it, of course.
