WhatsApp backs down: nothing will change if you don’t accept the new conditions, for now

The soap opera of the changes in the privacy policy of WhatsApp continues, a saga that began at the beginning of the year. When it seemed clear that, barring government interference, the non-acceptance of the privacy policy progressively limit WhatsApp’s capabilities, the company has completely changed the discourse on its website.

As now indicated in the Help Center of WhatsApp, “No user account will be removed or access to WhatsApp features will be removed on May 15 due to this update.” That is, accept the privacy policy or not do it will not have changes, for the moment, in the functionality of WhatsApp.

For the moment, without limitations

At the beginning of the month, WhatsApp detailed its roadmap for those who resist accepting the privacy policy, describing a gradual suspension of functions. First, the list of chats disappeared, then you will not be able to make or receive calls and later you will not be able to receive messages or receive notifications. Namely, little by little WhatsApp became unusable.

The discourse has changed again, and not for the first time. After the initial controversy since WhatsApp announced its privacy policy at the beginning of the year, the company retracted at the end of the same month of January: temporarily removed the notice. It didn’t take long for the notice to come back.

Finally, May 15 arrived and although the notice may not appear, the phasing out of functionality continued and included European users. The privacy policy continues, and the notices will continue to appear, but not accepting the policy will not cause a limitation of functionality, for the moment.

For those who have not yet done so, we will continue to show a notification on WhatsApp in which we offer more information about it and we remind you to review and accept it. At this time, we do not plan to make these reminders persistent or limit the functionality of the app.

The previous extract, extracted from the section What will happen after the effective date? from the WhatsApp Help Center includes the important distinction of “at this time“I mean, there is still room for a new chapter in this soap opera. The reminders are not planned to be persistent either.

That is, those who have accepted the new privacy policy, will continue under its conditions and those who do not, will remain tied to the previous policy. In practice, those who have accepted – the majority of users, says WhatsApp – will be able to use WhatsApp as usual and those who have not, but with sporadic notices to do so.
