The first GCam 8.8 is here: this updated Google camera brings the latest from the Pixel to your Android

Few applications make as much difference in the Google Pixel as its camera, that application that comes standard in the company’s phones and that, luckily for the rest of the users, has ended up being exported to all Android thanks to the fabulous GCam. Said GCam is being updated to the same extent: we already have the first version of the Google 8.8 camera. We have tested it and it works quite well.

Google recently released version number 8.8 of its Pixel’s camera. With this version some improvements were introduced; as a new adjustment in the exposure speed that reaches the night mode of the Google Pixel 7. After releasing the official version, the “modders” of the GCam began the adaptation to the rest of Android. And BSG was the first to do it.

A sufficiently stable GCam and compatible with other Androids

As often happens, the Google camera modified in its version 8.8 does not work for all Android phones, since it highly depends on the software and hardware included in the phones. The GCam doesn’t usually get along well with One UI, for example, nor with non-Snapdragon processors. This applies to BSG version 8.8 as well: while we’ve tested it on a number of phones, compatibility doesn’t have to be generic.

In this first version of the GCam, BSG specialized in adapting the requirements of the Google Pixel to the rest of Android. In this sense, the application has not seen the weight optimized, it also does not yet have the advanced options that are so common in Google camera mods. As a good first step, the important thing is to open the way: we will see the progression over the next few weeks.

On phones like the Nothing Phone (1), MGC 8.8 works almost like a native camera app. The mod shows fast, works almost perfectly, correctly applies Google’s famous automatic processing with little delay after the shot, the photos obtained are of high quality and it allows you to activate most of the functions of the Google Pixel, including the different video recording modes. Yes, the timer for the night capture does not appear, at the moment exclusive to the Google Pixel 7.

MGC 8.8, from modder BSG, is available on Celso Azevedo’s page, just like the rest of GCam. Like any modded app that is installed from outside of Google Play, you must accept the risks involved in such installation.
