Microsoft to offer 99.99% uptime for Azure Active Directory soon

Microsoft’s SLA for Azure Active Directory is currently 99.9%. But not for long, as Microsoft has announced that it will soon offer 0.09% more, up to 99.99% uptime for Azure Active Directory.

Starting April 1, Microsoft plans to update its service level agreement (SLA) for Azure Active Directory user authentication to 99.99%. Reaching this uptime will be an improvement over the current SLA of 99.9%.

Azure Active Directory, a multi-tenant identity management service, processes tens of billions of authentications up to date. To fulfill its promise of 99.99% uptime, Microsoft is aiming to eliminate service credit for administrative functions. It will include only vital user federation and authentication functions under the Azure AD SLA.

Any period of time when users are unable to log into the service, access the Access Panel applications, and reset passwords will count as downtime for the service. Additionally, organizations can take advantage of service credits if the uptime of Azure AD falls below the SLA. For example, Microsoft offers a full service credit when uptime drops below 95% per month.

Microsoft attributed the improved SLA to its ongoing resilience investment program. By doing this, you improve reliability in all areas of your identity services.

To increase the reliability of Azure AD, Microsoft centralized the architecture to determine the scope and isolate the impact of failures to a minimum number of users. It included a backup authentication service that transparently and automatically handles authentications for participating workloads. It also includes Azure infrastructure authentication integrated with endpoints regional authentication. In addition to this, it provided instant enforcement of policy changes with the Continuous Access Assessment (CAE) product for critical Microsoft 365 services.

“In discussions with our customers, we learned that the most important promise of our service is to ensure that all users can log into the applications and services they need without interruption. This was said by Nadim Abdo, vice president of engineering at Microsoft.

“To deliver on this promise, we are updating the Azure AD SLA availability definition to include only user authentication and federation (AND the removal of administrative features). This focus on critical user authentication scenarios aligns our engineering investments with the vital functions that must be kept healthy for customer businesses to function. ”
