Instagram unifies IGTV and video posts, increases their maximum length and other changes

IGTV arrived in 2018 as a great bet for vertical videos and the intention of competing with YouTube. At that time it was already possible to upload videos to Instagram as normal publications, but IGTV meant an exclusive section for them and other advantages, such as being able to upload videos of up to an hour in length. Three years later, IGTV videos and standard Instagram posts unify.

Instagram “long” videos will become simply Instagram Video, accessible from a special tab in the user profile. Short videos are still the province of Instagram Reels, which for the moment remains independent. With this unification come other changes including more editing options and a longer maximum video length.

Don’t call it IGTV, call it Instagram Video

Facebook has not announced that it has ended IGTV, although the result comes to mean the same. Video posts and IGTV videos will be unified under the name Instagram Video, and will be visible as normal posts. Although Facebook does not specify it, it is understood that the exclusive IGTV screen disappears.

Instead, video posts will be viewable from the video tab of each user’s profile, which basically replaces the old IGTV tab, with a new icon. When watching videos from here, you can swipe up to see related content. These videos will also be visible as previews in normal posts on Instagram.

By ending IGTV as such, video posts gain certain features to fill in the absence. To get started, Instagram video posts can be 60 minutes, with 60-second previews in the bio (or 15 seconds, if they have ads).

Also, video posts on Instagram can now tag people and places, add new filters and trim the duration of the clip before sharing. For now, the IGTV application will remain active for those who want to access video content, as confirmed by an Instagram spokesperson to The Verge.
