13 tricks to get the most out of Notion on your mobile

Notion is not exactly a new productivity app but until a few months ago, their personal plans were paid and finally they became free with what the app earned in full. Notion thus became a more than interesting alternative to other apps like Evernote or Trello, and today we have brought it to one of our cheat compilations to get more out of it.

In the compilations of cheats for Notion it is common to find a vast majority dedicated to desktop systems but here we will focus on the cheats and guides for mobile phones. We will see that some of the commands that are activated by text here are simple buttons to which we have faster access. Let’s get started.

Don’t start from scratch, use a template

Templates in Notion

Notion has many possibilities and they are all at our disposal when we create a blank document, so it may be easier for us to start if we use the templates. Access is at the bottom once we have clicked on “Add a page” to create a document. We simply go to “Choose a template “ and we will have at our disposal templates for boards, lists, calendars, meeting notes, etc. Just click on one and voila, formatted document.

Create a page from one you already have

Duplicate a page

Imagine that you create a document with a specific format that you want to use as your own template, or that you want to continue modifying a page from one point but keep the rest. Perhaps the best thing for these cases is to duplicate the page to have an exact copy of it. For this you just have to slide the left side menu, click on the three horizontal dots next to the page you want to duplicate and select “Duplicate “. Simple as that. You already have two.

Delete a page when it no longer serves you

Erase

Following the same process that has led to the duplication in the previous point, we can directly select “Delete” to send the page to the recycle bin. Do not worry if you make a mistake because the elimination will not be final until you indicate it. That’s what the section is for “Trash” from the left sidebar of Notion, to recover deleted pages whenever you want.

You’ve finished? Lock your page

To block

One of the options that Notion offers us when managing its infinite tree of pages is to block them. Once a page is locked, it cannot be deleted or modified until it is unlocked. A very useful security measure that is activated by accessing the page and going to the three vertical points in the upper right. There we activated the switch “Page lock “ and voila, the content of the page can no longer be altered. Just in case.

Place one page inside another

Nest one page within another

How can this be done? With Notion’s page nesting system. Thus, we indicate that a page is not independent but is hosted under another. Perhaps chapters of a book, or different sections of a superior document, or annexes. For this we only have to display the options of the page that we want to move in the left side menu and within choose “Move to “. Now we just have to choose the page that will be the container and voila, the first page will move into the second and we can access the tree with a drop-down.

Choose the font you write in

Choose the font in Notion Mono on the left, Serif on the right

Okay, the options regarding the text format of Notion are not very wide but we can choose the font in which we want to write. We will simply have to go to the three vertical dots from the top right of the screen while we write any text and then change the “Style”. We have the default type, the ‘Serif’ type and the ‘Mono’ type. To our liking. Of course, the entire interface is changed, not just sentences or individual paragraphs.

Change paragraph type on the fly

Paragraph formatting in Notion

Since Notion is an app for everything, we may be writing any type of content in a document without knowing exactly what we want to get from it or how we want to store it. Once we have it written (or during the writing process) we can go to the bottom, back to the shortcut bar, and click on “Turn into “. There we can convert the paragraph into a list, into a quote, into a piece of code. What we want from all the available formats. And only the paragraph in which we are at that moment will be changed.

Add comments (or discussions) to the text

Comments

Are you not sure how any part should be written? Do you have doubts about the figures you have registered? Can’t exactly remember a date? No problem. At any time you can add comments to your own text, something very useful also in collaborative boards (something that does not work in the personal plan). All you have to do is select the text to comment on and press the button with the speech bubble on the bottom. Clever. Now Notion will indicate, with an underline of another color, that that piece of the text is commented and we can solve it later or leave it forever.

Insert images, videos, audios or maps from Google Maps

Insert images in Notion

At any time during the edition we can go to the bottom and click on photography icon, right next to the trash can. Notion will then ask us if we want to capture an image on the fly (ideal for attaching handwritten notes or catalog photos, etc.) or if we want to go to our archives. We select the image that we want to attach and voila, we attach it. If we want more multimedia options, we can press the button ‘+ ‘ from the bottom of the document, slide to the part of attachments and there we will find videos, audio notes and more. And yes, we can attach Drive documents, tweets, PDFs and even Google Maps.

Share your pages wherever and with whoever you want

Share pages with Notion

We are in the era of the Internet, social networks and mobile phones, so how could we not share our documents with just anyone. To do this, you just have to be inside the page we want to share and press the Share button in the upper right, as simple as that. Click on ‘Share on the web‘to send to networks, email and others or click on’Invite people ‘ to turn our document into a collaborative document.

Mention dates, people or other pages

To mention

We have already become accustomed to internalize the use of the at sign as a symbol to call other elements. Here in Notion it is also used and at any time in the text we can go to the bottom bar and press the ‘@’. Notion will then ask us what we mention, if to another person (in collaborative documents), if a date or if another internal page that we have created. So we can link documents with others or enter reminders.

Check your notifications

Notifications

We have already seen that we can mention other people in our documents when they work in collaborative mode, and those people can make their own modifications, create comments or resolve ours. And all this is recorded in our notifications. Accessing them is as simple as press the bell button at the bottom and we will have the classic ‘Inbox’ inbox as well as other classified notifications. Very practical.

Use Notion in dark mode

Dark mode

As you will have seen throughout this tutorial, we have been using Notion on the mobile phone with the dark mode. The app does not have a dark mode as such that we can activate or deactivate, but it does It will adapt to the color scheme that we have activated on the phone. So if you are going to use Notion in low light, you may want to use it in dark, or in light mode if you are going to use it well lit. Each one to decide which option is better. But yes, Notion adapts to your phone.

These are the tricks that we have found the most interesting for, at least, that you start walking in Notion being able to take advantage of its power to create private or collaborative documents, format them and fill them with content. Of course, we leave you the comments so that you can tell us your tricks to get the most out of the app. And if they are useful, we will add them to the original list of 13 that we leave you.
